Chapter 15 Excerpt
The purpose of this chapter is to turn the spotlight of attention upon the cause and the cure of the six basic fears. Before we can master an enemy, we must know its name, its habits, and its place of abode. As you read, analyze yourself carefully, and determine which, if any, of the six common fears have attached themselves to you.
Do not be deceived by the habits of these subtle enemies. Sometimes they remain hidden in the subconscious mind, where they are difficult to locate, and still more difficult to eliminate.
There are six basic fears, with some combination of which every human suffers at one time or another. Most people are fortunate if they do not suffer from the entire six.
Named in the order of their most common appearance, they are:–
The fear of POVERTY
The fear of CRITICISM
The fear of ILL HEALTH
The fear of LOSS OF LOVE OF SOMEONE
The fear of OLD AGE
The fear of DEATH

Good morning, lady.
In today’s excerpt, Napoleon Hill talks about the six ghosts of fear. These are the six underlying fears that compromise all of our worries, everything that can trouble you at one time or another. He says that most human beings are suffering from at least one at any time, if not all six.
When we looked at the fourteen emotions and looked at what the major ones were, fear was right there at the bottom. It is the lowest of energies. Even though it is a low energy, it doesn’t mean it isn’t able to spread from one person to another.
One thing he said is that to fight your enemy, you must understand your enemy. You must know its name, you must know its habits, and you must know where it resides. When you can do those things, you can begin to conquer your fears.
So here are the six.
The fear of poverty. How am I going to cope? How am I going to live? How am I going to provide?
The fear of criticism. What will people say about me if I am not what they expect of me? It’s scary to think you’ll be judged, and so most people won’t even speak out for what they believe, because of the fear of criticism.
The fear of ill health. Nobody wants to get sick. It’s not your natural state of being. No one wants to feel that someone else has to be in control of them, that they’re not in control of their own body, their own mind, their own spirit. Ill health makes you feel less than you are.
The fear of losing a loved one. I’ve heard stories of people who last week were well, with no symptoms, and this week are no longer with us. Seeing this makes you fear for your own loved ones. These people around us become a part of us, and losing part of yourself is something to fear.
The fear of old age. Losing control of who you believe you are, losing your youth, your faculties, your strength, your power. Feeling powerless, feeling forgotten, feeling that maybe you haven’t reached everything you’d like to in life.
The fear of death. Reaching the end of your life unprepared, leaving behind the people you love before you were ready to.
One thing all six have in common is that they’re a thought. Fear is the way we think about a future that hasn’t yet arrived. We can look back at the past and not change it, because it’s already happened. We can look to the future and also not change it, because it hasn’t happened yet. All we can do is live in the present, and the one thing we have control of in the present is our thoughts.
Human beings are the only creatures on earth blessed with control of their thinking. Which means we’re also blessed with the power to overcome the thought of fear.
As a certified instructor for Napoleon Hill, I’ve studied some of his work outside Think and Grow Rich, and one of the practices he gives as protection for your mind is envisioning three walls of protection. I want you to visualise however this looks for you.
The Wall of Opportunity
The outer wall has more than one door. It’s tall. Many people can walk up to it, but not everyone can walk through. The people who can are those with some reason to take your time, verifiable information, an opportunity for your growth, something worthy of giving your time up for. Because not everyone is worthy of that. I call this the wall of opportunity. Opportunity knocks, and when it knocks, you can let it in and act on it.
The Wall of the Mastermind
The next wall in is higher, stronger, thicker. It has only one door. The only people allowed through are those who are part of your mastermind, people who already share your purpose and are working on it with you. You have ideas for them, they have ideas for you, and together you grow. There is no fear-based discussion here, only positive creation, only an understanding of your spiritual connection, only things that bring you both forward.
The Wall of Inner Me
The third wall is the tallest, the thickest, and it’s impenetrable. It has no doors. It’s the protection you create around your subconscious mind, that sacred space of creation and connection to infinite intelligence. Only you and God are in this space.
I call this the wall of Inner Me. Very easily, inner me can become your enemy, they’re almost the same word. Remember, it’s only inside you that the enemy of fear is created.
If you build this wall, and know that the only thing you’re letting into your subconscious is what you’ve created through affirmations, meditation, and prayer, it becomes a very sacred space. You can visualise how it looks inside. Is it a palace? A beach? The top of a mountain? Whatever makes you feel, this is where I connect.
For me, I have a screen where I can see the bigger picture of everything happening around me, even the things I thought came to harm me have come to help me. You can create whatever you want inside this room. Just don’t bring your fears in with you, unless it’s in the form of prayer, bringing the actual facts of what you’re frightened of, and asking for solutions.
So now you know the names of your enemies. Those six ghosts of fear are exactly that, ghosts. They’re only real when you give thought to them, because thought becomes a thing.
Some people are going to lose money right now, but for others it’s the biggest opportunity they’ve ever had to finally live on purpose, and turn their gifts and their passions into ways of service and value that make them rich beyond measure. You can choose.
Some people will criticise. But people who criticise you are usually not the ones already doing what you want to do. They’re the ones afraid to do it. You don’t get criticised by people who are achieving. You get criticised by people who are stuck and feel ashamed, afraid, or jealous that you’re doing it anyway. Those are not your people. Look for your people, and serve them.
Remember your outer wall, many doors, but not everyone gets through. Your inner wall, your mastermind, will prove valuable to you and help you grow. And the wall that protects your inner space is for you and God, and He is here for you, she is here for you, right now and every single day.
Thank you for listening. Bye for now.
